Introduction to the Medical Therapy Page

• The page name should be "(Disease name) medical therapy", with only the first letter of the title capitalized.
• Goal: To provide a comprehensive description of the main medical therapies used in the treatment of the disease you are describing.
• As with all microchapter pages linking to the main page, at the top of the edit box put {{CMG}}, your name template, and the microchapter navigation template you created at the beginning.
• Remember to create links within Wikidoc by placing [[square brackets]] around key words which you want to link to other pages. Make sure you makes your links as specific as possible. For example if a sentence contained the phrase anterior spinal artery syndrome, the link should be to anterior spinal artery syndrome not anterior or artery or syndrome. • Remember to follow the same format and capitalization of letters as outlined in the template below.
• You should include the name of the disease in the first sentence of every subsection.

Overview

• The overview section should include the disease name in the first sentence.
• The goal is to summarize the medical therapies used in the treating the disease in few sentences.

Template

• First Sentences:

[Disease name] is a medical emergency.

AND/OR

The mainstay of therapy for [disease name] is [therapy].

OR

The predominant therapy for [malignancy] is surgical resection. Adjunctive chemotherapy and radiation may be required.

OR

The optimal therapy for [malignancy] depends on the stage at diagnosis.

• Examples:

Example 1: Acute bacterial meningitis is a medical emergency.

Example 2: The mainstay of therapy for EBV mononucleosis is supportive care.

Example 3: The predominant therapy for acinic cell carcinoma is surgical resection. Adjunctive chemotherapy and radiation may be required.

Example 4: The optimal therapy for small cell carcinoma depends on the stage at diagnosis.

• Additional Sentences:

Additional Sentence 1: [Therapy] is recommended among all patients who develop [disease name].

Additional Sentence 2: Pharmacologic medical therapy is recommended among patients with [disease subclass 1], [disease subclass 2], and [disease subclass 3].

Additional Sentence 3: Pharmacologic medical therapies for [disease name] include (either) [therapy 1], [therapy 2], and/or [therapy 3].

Additional Sentence 4: Empiric therapy for [disease name] depends on [disease factor 1] and [disease factor 2].

Additional Sentence 6: Patients with [disease subclass 1] are treated with [therapy 1], whereas patients with [disease subclass 2] are treated with [therapy 2].

Additional Sentence 7: [Therapy] is the drug of choice to treat [disease name].

Additional Sentence 8: [Therapy] is the preferred drug for the treatment of [disease name].

Additional Sentence 9: Supportive therapy for [disease name] includes [therapy 1], [therapy 2], and [therapy 3].

• Examples:

Example 1: Antimicrobial therapy is recommended among all patients who develop bacterial pneumonia.

Example 2: Antimicrobial therapy is recommended among all patients who develop septic arthritis.

Example 3: Antimicrobial therapy is recommended among patients with moderate and severe furuncles.

Example 4: Empiric antimicrobial therapies for furuncle include either TMP-SMX or Doxycycline for moderate furuncles, and either Vancomycin, Daptomycin, Linezolid, or Ceftaroline for severe furuncles.

Example 5: Empiric antimicrobial therapy for endocarditis depends on the nature of the valve (native vs. prosthetic) and the onset following valve implantation (less than 1 year vs. more than 1 year).

Example 6: Patients with gonococcal urethritis are treated with Azithromycin and either Ceftriaxone or Cefixime. Patients with non-gonococcal urethritis are treated with either Azithromycin or Doxycycline.

Example 7: Penicillin is the drug of choice to treat rheumatic fever.

Example 8: Penicillin G is the preferred drug for the treatment of all stages of syphilis.

Example 9: Supportive therapy for adenovirus upper respiratory infection includes bed rest, fluids, and anti-inflammatory drugs.
