This patient displays features of the lateral pontine syndrome usually due to the occlusion of the anterior inferior cerebellar artery (AICA). Upper and lower facial paralysis is classical of AICA lesions due to the involvement of the facial nuclei. Loss of sensation from the face is due to the spinal trigeminal nucleus involvement. Hearing loss is also indicative of an AICA lesion due to the involvement of the cochlear nucleus. Further investigation may show ataxia due to the involvement of the inferior cerebellar peduncle, nystagmus and vertigo secondary to vestibular nucleus invovement, and decreased taste from anterior 2/3 of tongue due to facial nucleus involvement.
