Overview
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) has been associated with the development of pericarditis and or myocarditis in one third of IBD patients. Treatement with drugs containing 5-aminosalicylic acid have been associated with the development of pericarditis in inflammatory bowel disease.[1] Those with Crohn's disease seem to be at a lower risk than ulcerative colitis. Ulcerative colitis may also be associated with endocarditis as well.[2] The presence of pericarditis may predate the diagnosis of inflammatory bowel disease.
