This image depicts a young child who’s lower right torso reveals the presence of an ulcerated skin lesion, which developed at a plague inoculation site, which is one of the ways this bacterial infection can manifest itself. Plague is caused by the Gram-negative bacterium, Yersinia pestis, and this lesion represents the point at which this child had been bitten by an infected vector flea.
