At a magnification of 1000X, this blood smear photomicrograph revealed the presence of a number of intra-erythrocytic forms of Babesia sp. hemoprotozoan parasites. Babesia parasites resemble Plasmodium falciparum, however Babesia has several distinguishing features: the parasites are pleomorphic (vary in shape and size), can be vacuolated, and do not produce pigment.
