Overview

Thyroid adenoma was first discovered by Fabricious, in 1619 when he described that thyroid enlargement causes mid line neck swelling.

Historical Perspective

Discovery

  • Fabricious in 1619 described that thyroid enlargement causes mid line neck swelling. He also pointed out that the swelling moves with deglutition.

Landmark Events in the Development of Treatment Strategies

  • A treatment strategy called setaceum was used to remove thyroid glands. This method was introduced by Roland and Rogers.[1]
  • Thyroid tunneling was introduced by Guy de Chauliac.
