A halogen bond is the noncovalent interaction between a halogen atom (iodine, bromine, chlorine) and an electron rich environment like a lone pair of oxygen or nitrogen.[1]

Applications include liquid crystals, crystal engineering and many biological processes, like the binding of the thyroid hormone thyroxine at its transport proteins.[2]
