Overview

Symptoms of linitis plastica may include dyspepsia, nausea, vomiting, early satiety, loss of appetite, weight loss, abdominal discomfort and sometimes diarrhea.[1][2] [3] A positive family history of diffuse gastric cancer may be present if it is the hereditary form of the disease.

History and symptoms

  • Diffuse gastric adenocarcinoma or linitis plastica remains asymptomatic for a long time before diagnosis. Therefore, when a patient presents with symptoms, the disease is usually in an advanced stage.[4]
  • Thickening and rigidity of the stomach wall makes the process of digestion difficult and the patient may complain of nausea, vomiting, bloating and sometimes diarrhea.
  • Patients may develop non specific symptoms like:[1][2][3]
  • A family history of linitis plastica may be present in patients with the hereditary diffuse adenocarcinoma, which is autosomal dominantly inherited.
