Silent thyroiditis was primarily known as the painless form of the subacute thyroiditis as clinical course is the same. It was differentiated from postpartum thyroiditis on the basis of thyroid involvement outside of the postpartum period.

It was differentiated from postpartum thyroiditis on the basis of thyroid involvement outside of the postpartum period. In 1975, the detailed description of thyrotoxicosis caused by silent thyroiditis was published.[1][2][3]
