Overview
In 1952, Vittorio Staudacher was the first to perform a liver transplantation (LT) in a canine species. In 1968, Roy Calne and Roger Williams reported 5 cases of liver transplant, discussing the technical problems by details. In 1984, Bismuth reported the first left-lobe LT in a child. Now, there are hundreds of liver transplant centres in over 80 countries.

- Thomas Starzl published the first three attempts at human LT. In 1967 the procedure resulted in the first extended survival.[2]
- In 1968, Roy Calne and Roger Williams reported 5 cases of liver transplant, discussing the technical problems by details.[3]
- In the late 1970s, the introduction of cyclosporine as part of the immunosuppressive regimen in organ transplantation permitted prevention of rejection and severe opportunistic infections when compared to azathioprine.[4]
- In 1984, Bismuth reported the first left-lobe LT in a child.
- In 1988, Pichlmayr performed the first split-LT in Germany.
- In 1985, Silvano Raia described the first attempt at a living donor graft in a child.[5]
- Since the nineties, there are hundreds of liver transplant centres in over 80 countries.
