Winchester bottles are a common type of glassware for laboratories. The bottles take their name from the archaic Winchester measure, which was used in Winchester from Anglo-Saxon times.[1]

Today, solvents and corrosive compounds such as hydrochloric acid are commonly supplied in Winchesters. Because of their ubiquity, they are commonly used to collect and dispose chemical waste. That said, plastic carboys are preferable because they do not break easily.
