Balloon Sinuplasty™ Technology is the name of a proprietary device system used in the treatment of sinusitis. The System is used to enlarge narrowed or blocked sinus passageways using a flexible catheter that is inflated at the narrow or blocked site and then removed, allowing normal mucociliary flow to resume. This is a less invasive tool than tools used in the standard, conventional method, Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS) in which physicians use rigid instruments to cut and remove bone and tissues to enlarge the sinus passageways. The Balloon Sinuplasty System has been demonstrated to be safe and effective in opening the sinus passageways. In addition, patients treated with the Balloon Sinuplasty System have reported clinically significant improvements in their sinus symptoms. The technology is used in an out-patient procedure, and people typically return to work and normal activities the next day.
