Diagnostic studies like intravenous pyelography have largely been replaced by ultrasound and CT scans because of their diagnostic accuracy and relatively low radiation exposure.

- Obstruction is demonstrated as a dense nephrogram along with delayed excretion of the contrast into a dilated collecting system.
- Can be used to evaluate renal function in the long term.
