Pharmaceutical companies are decreasing the amount they spend on drug advertisements, according to a recent report by TNS Media Intelligence. Between January and August 2008, drug companies spent $3.2 billion on advertising, a decrease of 6% when compared to the same time period in 2007. In addition, spending fell 3% in 2007. Reasons for this decrease in advertising include: the small number of drugs gaining FDA approval, the introduction of more niche drugs that target small patient populations, greater congressional vigilance, and growing concerns among drug company executives that consumer directed promotion is destroying the credibility of the pharmaceutical industry.
