Overview

Ultrasound may be helpful in the diagnosis of inguinal hernia. Findings on an ultrasound diagnostic of inguinal hernia include herniated bowel contents, herniated fat and the normal intra-abdominal contents move inferior with the Valsalva maneuver.

Ultrasound

  • Ultrasound may be helpful in the diagnosis of inguinal hernia. Findings on an ultrasound diagnostic of inguinal hernia include:[1][2]
    • Herniated bowel contents may show peristalsis
    • Herniated fat appears hyperechoic
    • Reducibility and bowel viability is identified by peristalsis or mucosal blood flow
