Arthrosis is damage of the articular cartilage and secondary disintegration of the articular surface of bones.

Stages of Arthrosis

Stage I

  • Mild clinical symptoms
  • X-ray may show discrete sclerotization of the cotyloid cavity
  • The articular space and the condyle remain intact

Stage II

  • The mobility of the joint decreases due to pain
  • The rigidity of the joint
  • There appear small cysts in the cotyloid cavity
  • X-ray may show fine osteophytes

Stage III

  • The mobility of the joint significantly limited.
  • Secondary inflammation may occur.
  • X-ray may show cavitary or condylar cysts
  • Irregularly narrowing of articular cavity.

Stage IV

  • The joint is almost stiff, and immobile.
  • Usually signs of secondary inflammation are present often takes place,
  • Signs of muscle decompensation are observable.
  • X-ray may show severe deformation of the joint as:
  • deformation of the condyle and acetabulum
  • cystic degeneration
  • detritus in the articular cavity
  • bizarre osteophytes
  • extremely narrow articular space
