Overview

The following motility disorders cause biliary colic without the presence of gallstones: functional gallbladder disorder (FGD) and biliary sphincter of Oddi disorder (SOD).

Causes

• The following motility disorders cause biliary colic without the presence of gallstones:
  • Functional gallbladder disorder (FGD)
  • Biliary sphincter of Oddi disorder (SOD)
• Biliary dyskinesia happens when:
  • Due to gallbladder dyskinesia/hypokinesia, which leads to abnormal gallbladder contraction, bile is not secreted properly.
  • There is no coordination between gallbladder contraction and sphincter of Oddi relaxation.
  • Due to an obstruction (structural or functional), bile is not able to flow through the common bile duct (CBD).
