In histology Azan (Az: Azocarmine and An: aniline blue) is used to distinguish cells from the extracellular matrix.

  • Stains→nucleus red/purple.
  • Cytoplasm is stained pink.
  • Red blood cells stained red.
  • Collagen fibers blue.
  • Muscle fibers red.
  • Cartilage and bone matrix deep blue.

Also, in Greek mythology, Azan was the son of Arcas and Erato. Azania in Arcadia was named for him.
